On Saturday, November 6, 2010, I was honored at the Leadership Fairfax awards gala. I received a corporate leadership award for our participation in the local community.
It was a wonderful evening, and you can view some of the photos from the gala
here.
It's nice to receive awards. And while I was the recipient, this award actually belongs to the entire community surrounding The Dandelion Patch; our staff, our customers and all of our supporters.
What did we do? Together, The Dandelion Patch community raised $15,000 for
Childhelp, a not-for-profit organization committed to the prevention and treatment of child abuse right here in the Northern Virginia area. We also served as a drop-off point for gifts and clothing, and over the past year we collected 600 items; games, books, toys, coats and clothing. Alongside our wonderful customers, we individually wrapped each gift for the children who are being treated in the Childhelp program.
It's hard to believe that child abuse occurs right here in our area. Sadly, child abuse knows no geographic, economic, ethnic or cultural boundaries.
We will present a check for $15,000 on December 11th to Childhelp at their annual holiday party. This party is held at their residential treatment center In Culpepper, VA. Children here receive individual, 24-hour a day care. The staff of therapists, teachers, social workers and medical professionals provides a nurturing environment in which trust, self-esteem and healing can take root and grow. A combination of psychotherapy, education, art, music, animal-assisted, spiritual and recreational therapies are used. The work is powerful and transformational for these children.
So, while I was personally recognized on November 6th, the entire community of The Dandelion Patch is the recipient of this award.
I thank you all, from the bottom of my heart.
